The dedication of a group of volunteer gardeners has seen them scoop a medal at a major competition.

A team from the Brightlingsea in Bloom committee beat off tough competition from other major UK towns to win a silver medal at the RHS National Flower Bed Competition.

The competition, which is only open to entrants specifically invited by the RHS, is held as part of the annual Tatton Park show.

Hopeful entrants are asked to submit a plan for a six-metre by four-metre flowerbed and a panel of RHS judges then invite the teams behind their favourite designs to enter the competition.

Val Gilders, chairwoman of Brightlingsea in Bloom said the team was delighted to not only be invited to enter, but also to beat entries from 23 other towns such as Blackpool, Darlington and Bournemouth to the silver medal.

She said: "This was all volunteers doing it in their own time and with their own money."
