Schools are being urged to collect old copies of the Yellow Pages and win cash.
Rochford District Council has teamed up with Yellow Pages, the Woodland Trust, and the Directory Recycling Scheme for the project.
Schools simply collect old copies of the Yellow Pages with sandcastles on the cover when the new ones are delivered next month.
The council will arrange for them to be recycled and the school which collects the most per pupil wins £300.
Gillian Gallagher, council co-ordinator for the contest, said: "It's a simple, fun and educational competition to benefit schools and the environment."
