Southend United's attacking central midfielder Jay Smith has stepped up his rehabilitation programme, Blues boss Steve Wignall confirmed today.

The 21-year-old has suffered a frustrating five months battling to overcome a troublesome groin injury, but the Shrimpers chief said the former Aston Villa player was well on the road to recovery.

"Jay has joined in with the rest of the lads for the first time this week and fingers-crossed he is starting to win his battle back to fitness," said Wignall.

"He has been running and has also taken part in his first keep-ball exercise with the other players, which is a positive sign.

"The last few months have been very frustrating for Jay as he is the sort of boy who wants to be involved all the time and doesn't like being on the sidelines.

"But now he needs to be careful and not push himself too hard as he is very keen and now he has started training wants everything today.

"I'm pleased with Jay's progress and as long as there is no relapse he could be involved with the first team again in three to four weeks' time."

Wignall added that midfielder Neil Jenkins (hamstring) had started running and could be back in a fortnight.
