A number of different areas in south Essex are to benefit from a huge cash injection via the Thames Gateway.

A cash injection of almost £30 million for Southend could herald the start of the long-awaited outer bypass for the town, according to senior politicians.

They were today hopeful a chunk of the Thames Gateway money will go towards relieving traffic congestion in the area as the need for a new relief road grows almost daily.

It has been revealed some of the cash allocated by the Government will go towards planning and designing a new road to the town's only remaining large area of housing land at the New Ranges in Shoebury.

Rochford and Southend East Tory MP Sir Teddy Taylor said it was encouraging the money would cover a roads study to serve any development at the New Ranges.

Delighted politicians were also celebrating today after it was announced Canvey would benefit from a £6million injection from the Thames Gateway - just a day after they feared they would get nothing.

The money handed out by deputy Prime Minister John Prescott will go towards creating a new business park on land off Northwick Road, owned by the East of England Development Agency, and on regenerating the island.

The Prime Minister helped Mr Prescott to the £2billion Thames Gateway package to build 120,000 homes and create 180,000 jobs yesterday.

While news neighbouring Basildon would receive £24.5million of investment emerged early on, Canvey councillors did not hear about the island's good fortune until late last night.

Ray Howard, who represents the island on Essex County Council, said: "I am absolutely delighted."

In addition The Office of the Deputy Prime Minister said £32.3m will be directed at Thurrock for "masterplanning, land assembly and remediation in Purfleet, Grays and Tilbury.

The money will be in addition to the tens of millions expected to be poured into the planned Urban Development Corporation for Thurrock.

The statement says there is "extensive development potential" in Thurrock, and the money will help bring order to it.
