Plans to create a new village post office look set to fail even though an existing one is due to shut next month.
Proposals have been put forward to open a new post office counter in a section of a farm shop in Mersea Road, Abberton.
But even though the village's existing post office, in Layer Road, is due to close in December, the plans have not received the backing of officers at Colchester Council.
They have said the new facility would be too far from the centre of the village and would not be easily accessible for pedestrians.
A report to the council's planning committee said there was no footpath on the same side of the road as the farm shop and there was no crossing point from a footway opposite.
Officers felt no pathway would be put in as it would cost about £12,500.
But the plans have been supported by Abberton and Langenhoe Parish Council as a post office in the village is thought to be a vital facility.
