A new father is worried for children's safety after bulldozers and lorries moved in to "blitz" the green opposite his house.

Stephen Hughes, 38, of Firlie Walk in Monkwick, Colchester, says no one let him know the work was to go ahead and that the huge lorries are a danger to children who use the route to walk to school.

"No one knocked on our door to tell us or see if we had any objections, now there are lorries half the size of the street that have just blitzed the place," he said.

Work has now begun to change the open space near Queen Elizabeth Way, Talcott Road and Firlie Walk into a council compound.

It will be used for 14 months to store kitchens and bathrooms being installed in nearby council homes.

Clare David, principal planning officer at Colchester Council, explained: "When an application is received we send out neighbour notification letters to residents living immediately near the application site, so residents along Firlie Walk and Talcott Road were notified.

"But, we did not receive any comments from residents. We do not knock on doors for comments but even comments received after the 21 days are taken into account."
