Commuters faced rail delays yesterday after weekend engineering works at Witham overran

Morning trains running into London operated to speed limits and were severely delayed, while the track out of London was only re-opened to services at 7.30am.

The engineering works, which were the responsibility of Network Rail, involved replacing worn-out track and ballast in the Witham area.

A Network Rail spokeswoman said the problem was caused by staffing issues on top of track renewal work it was carrying out
