Passing motorists sounded their horns in support of anti-war demonstrators as they unveiled banners across the A127.
Go home - protesters on the A127 at Kent Elms Picture: STEVE O'CONNELL
A dozen members of Southend Stop the War Coalition fixed the banners to the Kent Elms footbridge over the dual carriageway this morning in protest at US president George W Bush's state visit.
Organiser Tim Sneller said: "The message is that huge numbers of people still disagree with the war and they are completely convinced that the war was fought for a lie.
"Bush should not be here on a triumphal visit - there is no triumph and he should just go home."
Hundreds of people from south Essex will be joining the protests, particularly tomorrow's national demonstration.
A spokesman for Essex Police said: "The general rule is that peaceful demonstration is entirely acceptable. The Southend group are only holding a banner over a bridge."
