A rescue operation swung into action after a person, believed to be suicidal, was reported to be on the edge of a cliff.
Emergency services carried out a search by land, sea and air in Walton when the alarm was raised at about 9.21pm.
A man from the town, believed to be in his 50s, was reported to be threatening to jump from the top of cliffs near Woodberry Way.
Police suspected the man had been involved in an alleged assault earlier in the evening and were concerned for his welfare.
The man, who has not been named, was found at his home within an hour.
He was arrested on suspicion of assault and was today being questioned
