A 66-year-old woman fought off a thug who repeatedly punched her as he tried to snatch her handbag in Victoria Road in Laindon.
The victim, from Laindon, was taken to Basildon Hospital with a large lump to her head and cut eye.
She received treatment and was later allowed to go home.
