Angry campaigners protesting against a block of flats planned for Canvey seafront have handed a 2,000-signature petition to Castle Point Council.
Residents and business bosses on Eastern Esplanade have already said they would rather see a tourist attraction like a bowling alley built on Canvey seafront rather than a block of flats.
Their latest move to block proposals was to gather the petition and hand it to the council before next Tuesday's crunch planning committee meeting, at which a decision will be made.
A storm of protest has emerged since an application was lodged with Castle Point Council for planning permission for 32 flats to be constructed on the island's Lubbins car park.
A private developer wants to transform half of the site into a block of flats. The other half of the car park is council-owned.
Only five letters of objection had been handed in to the council before the regeneration group Canvey 2000, which has spent thousands of pounds improving the seafront, got together 2,002 signatures for the petition.
