Blues captain Kevin Maher has admitted he would welcome the appointment of Stan Collymore as the club's new player manager.
Collymore is interested in becoming the latest Shrimpers boss and has held talks with the Roots Hall hierarchy to discuss the possibility.
"I think it would be great for the club and the fans if Stan was made manager," said Maher.
"He would give everyone a massive lift and, because of what he did with Southend as a player, I'm sure he would be very popular with the supporters. I'm sure he's someone they could all associate with."
Maher also admitted Collymore's playing potential could help revitalise the struggling Seasiders.
