A vicious attack was launched on a Brentwood man as he fought to stop a street robber from snatching his bag.

A spokesman for Brentwood Police said: "The man was walking to his house in Headley Chase when he was approached by the robber who tried to steal his bag.

"They struggled and then the man was punched repeatedly in the face and knocked to the ground.

"The victim suffered nasty injuries to the face, eye and elbow."

Police said the robber failed to get away with the bag, but walked calmly away in the direction of Woodman Road after the attack.
