Attackers left a man badly beaten up after assaulting him as he walked home.
Their victim suffered serious facial injuries and needed hospital treatment after the attack in Colchester.
Police said the man, who was in Magdalen Street, New Town, was left with a broken nose, a broken jaw and severe bruising to his face.
Det Sgt Roger Napier, of Colchester CID, said: "He was walking home with some friends when they were approached by three men, who started being abusive."
He said: "We've had two attacks recently where people have been going about their business and someone has come up to them and deliberately picked a fight."
