Residents in Witham can look forward to more frequent bus services now an operator has stepped in on two routes dropped by First Essex.

Stansted-based Locallink has announced the launch of its "network Witham" services 38 and 39 from December 8.

The routes replace the around-town services scrapped by First Essex and will operate between 6.25am and 8pm Mondays to Saturdays.

Route 38 will operate every 30 minutes from Forest Road via the town centre to Allectus Way, while Route 39 will run every 20 minutes from Safeway via the station and town centre to Powers Hall End.

Stephen Carr, managing director of network Witham, said his company hoped to make the services commercially viable by improving their frequency and reliability, and by running them earlier in the morning and later in the evening.

He said: "We've been looking at the Witham area since First's announcement. We do think there's some scope for services over there to run on a different basis to what they were before."

Witham mayor Bob Evans said the town council welcomed the announcement.
