Maldon's Marine Lake is to get a major overhaul in a bid to make it safe for youngsters to play in.

The district council looks set to pay for the revamp itself rather than by handing the popular tourist attraction over to a private businessman.

The council's community services committee was last night presented with two options for making improvements to the lake, which have to be put in place following the fatal accident last year when father-of-two Kevin Gay hit his head on a submerged post and later died.

Under the first scheme, the responsibility for running the lake would pass to a local entrepreneur, who has approached the council.

He wants to create four swimming pools within the existing boundary of the lake and fill in all the space in between.

He would build a new restaurant, coffee shop and toilet block and would probably charge visitors to swim in the pools.

Under the second scheme, the council would keep control of the lake and spend about £2 million making repairs and additions.

The full council will take the final decision on which option to go for at its meeting on December 18
