Members of the public are to be consulted about the future of Spring Lodge community centre

At last night's executive committee meeting of Braintree Council, Witham mayor Dr Bob Evans called for a deferral on the decision about the future of the community centre so further options can be considered.

He said: "By any standard of reasonableness, the report is weak and poorly argued when measured against the expressed wishes from the members and users of Spring Lodge Centre.

"The views of the people reject entirely the proposals set out in the report before you, which are, to close the centre and build a new provision a mile away."

Graham Butland, executive member for health and community, said the council would consult with the public about the future of the centre.
