Parts of Colchester town centre will be made either one-way or bus-only under proposals branded "radical but brilliant".
Highways experts and town planners in Colchester have been working on ways to keep the historic core of Colchester as traffic-free as possible.
So far their ideas include making North Hill, which has just had its bus lane scrubbed away, one-way with traffic only able to go down it towards Middleborough.
Bus gates, which allow only buses to pass at certain times of the day, are also planned for East Hill.
The idea is that motorists needing to go into the town centre, such as the disabled or business loading vehicles, will come in from Headgate, travel down High Street and out through St Botolph's.
Tory leader John Jowers said the proposals were "radical but brilliant".
