A goal right before full time has put Southend into the second round of the FA Cup.

Southend hero - Jay Smith scored twice at Park Lane last night

Jay Smith was the hero for the visitors as he netted twice including the winner as the Shrimpers beat Canvey Island 3-2 at Park Lane

The reward for Southend is a second round tie against Lincoln City.

Canvey Island took an early lead through Lee Boylan on ten minutes.

Southend drew themselves level on 23 minutes with Tes Bramble netting for the visitors.

But the tie took a further twist just before half-time when Canvey's lead was restored by Jeff Minton on 45 minutes.

Again Southend came from behind to draw the scores level at 2-2 shortly after the restart with Jay Smith getting his name on the score sheet.

Southend were reduced to ten men on 84 minutes when Mark Warren was dismissed for a second bookable offence.

But a dramatic winner was scored by Smith to put Southend into the next round just seconds before the final whistle.
