The future of hundreds of jobs at Harwich International Port is due to be decided in a crucial European vote today.
Cargo handlers employed by the port could lose their jobs to foreign workers if a new law is passed in the European Parliament.
MEPs will vote on whether foreign ships' crews should be able to load and unload their own cargo.
Richard Howitt, MEP, is opposed to the idea and how it could affect Harwich workers.
He said: "Foreign ship owners flying flags of convenience could replace trained and experienced dock workers with immediate effect if this vote goes the wrong way."
Hutchison Ports UK, which owns Felixstowe Port and Harwich International Port, declined to comment before the vote had taken place
