The Government has decided against making St Peter's Hospital in Maldon a listed building, clearing the way for health bosses to sell the site for development.
The Department of Culture, Media and Sport was requested to consider listing the Spital Road hospital a year ago, by a member of the public.
A lengthy investigation was carried out, but the department eventually announced this week that the former Victorian workhouse did not merit protected status.
St Peter's is owned by the Mid-Essex Hospitals NHS Trust, but is mainly used by Maldon and South Chelmsford Primary Care Trust (PCT).
