A Government minister got stuck in to a town regeneration project that could create a park, pond and play area on residents' doorsteps.

Labour portfolio holder for nature conservation and fisheries Ben Bradshaw visited the green area and allotments, near Southend's Cluny Square, yesterday for the unveiling of redevelopment plans.

The £200,000 scheme will see a netball court built in the square, and the transformation of the unused portion of allotment land into a park with trees, hedgerows and pond.

Mr Bradshaw said: "This is all part of the Government's quality of life agenda - what matters most to people is what is going on in their own community."
