Shrimpers supremo Ron Martin was today hoping Oxford United would change their mind and allow him to talk to top Blues boss target Ian Atkins.
The Southend United co-owner has finally confirmed Atkins as his number one choice to succeed Steve Wignall but has had an initial approach rebuffed by Oxford.
Martin has been refused permission to discuss terms with the 46-year-old boss, whose side currently sit on top of Division Three.
"I've spoken to the chairman at Oxford and they have not granted me permission to talk to Mr Atkins," said Martin.
"It all depends on the attitude of the board at Oxford but I hope they will give us a chance to talk to their manager.
"At the moment that isn't the case and, without their say so, I'm not allowed to talk to Mr Atkins. Things could change in the next couple of days but there are no guarantees."
