A fisherman has been ordered to do community service for harassing his ex-mother-in-law over a £3,000 debt.

Kevin Haggis, 41, of Portobello Road, Walton, had denied the charge which involved Rhonda Brooke-Taylor.

But magistrates sitting at Colchester yesterday heard the case was proved at a subsequent hearing and adjourned for a pre-sentence report.

Karan Savjani, prosecuting, said Haggis swore and shouted at her in the street in Walton on two consecutive days.

On July 11, as she stepped on to the pavement, she saw his vehicle heading in her direction.

But just as a neighbour appeared on the scene, it straightened up, and he drove off laughing, Mr Savjani told the court.

David Davies, mitigating, said there was a great deal of history behind the incidents and that the money had been owed to Haggis for a long period of time, despite his going to county court over it.

He said Haggis had commited the offence out of frustration.

The bench ordered Haggis to serve a 60-hour community punishment and ordered him to pay £125 costs.
