A cycle route planned for Sadlers Farm has been put on the backburner while major junction improvements are planned for the busy roundabout.
The path - part of a county-wide plan to link all cycleways - was supposed to be created in August after months of battling by councillors.
However plans have been shelved until at least next year while county councillors focus on a possible connection between the A13 and the A130.
County councillors have agreed a 15-year plan to help improve roads in the county needs to take priority.
A spokesman for Essex County Council said: "As part of reducing traffic congestion we are planning a major junction improvement to Sadlers Farm with a possible direct link from the A13 to the A130.
"We will put a hold on the cycleway to prevent any work being dug up and redone."
