Southend supremo Ron Martin has revealed the reasoning behind his decision not to appoint fans' favourite Stan Collymore.
"The club is in a potentially precarious position and for Stan to take the reins at this time would be a risk," he said.
"After careful consideration the board and I felt this wasn't the moment for Stan to manage Southend United.
"We need someone who has considerable experience not only in man management and tactical awareness, but also a thorough knowledge of players in the Football League who we may need to acquire to strengthen the squad now and in the immediate future."
"But I wish to maintain my dialogue with Stan because he is very capable of bringing something to the party."
