Ambulance staff have hit out at thieves who raided their station and stole cash while they were out answering 999 calls.

Thieves took £55 which had been collected for a colleague's wedding present and another £30 from the tea collection at the station in Broadmayne, Basildon.

The raid is another blow for Basildon paramedics, who have recently suffered a spate of thefts from ambulances and response cars while attending emergencies.

In these incidents, emergency mobile phones and first aid kits were stolen - but now the paramedics are having personal items snatched.

Paul Leveratt, operations manager at Basildon ambulance station, said: "It was bad enough that they were taking equipment from our vehicles, but now it seems that not even our personal stuff is safe.

The theft happened sometime during the afternoon of November 12.

Anyone with information should call Basildon police on 01268 532212.
