A scathing attack was today launched on Castle Point's council leader by an angry member of her own party.

Tory councillor Lionel Hart spoke out after Pam Challis organised a meeting with Chief Supt John Mauger behind his back.

Furious Mr Hart said he should have been first to know about the development as he chairs the community safety sub-committee which Mr Mauger is set to attend just before Christmas.

In a letter sent out to all members of the council, the borough's chief executive Barry Rollinson and MP Bob Spink, Mr Hart tells of his frustration.

He said: "This is a further example of the arrogant, discourteous and discriminating attitude you (Mrs Challis) have always taken towards me since you became leader.

"I would remind you that I am chairman of that sub-committee and I would have expected to have been told about Mr Mauger's visit prior to it being announced publicly.

"I now ask if you can give a logical explanation for this attitude."

Mrs Challis was unavailable for comment.
