Parents have voted unanimously against the closure of a school for children with special needs in Clacton.

Essex County Council wants to officially shut the Leas School for pupils with moderate learning difficulties at the end of August 2005.

At a special meeting behind closed doors last night the full proposal was outlined to parents, staff, headteachers and governors.

But it failed to win any kind of approval with the 50 or so people gathered at the threatened school.

Paul Honeywood, chairman of the Leas Parents Group, said it was an emotional meeting.

"After the county council had put forward its ideas I called for a vote on the proposal and it was unanimous against the closure," he said.

"I did not see one hand go up to support the move and I hope they got the message."

Essex County Council wants to close the Leas School within two years, but keep primary-aged pupils at the site until 2008 when they will move over to a new model special school on the Windsor School campus in Clacton.
