A proposed retail park petrol filling station has been given the go-ahead despite fears it could force other smaller businesses out of business.
Permission for the petrol station, a kiosk and car wash at Brook Park in London Road, Clacton, was granted by Tendring councillors last night.
George Milleare, who runs the petrol station closest to the proposed site, had warned he could be forced to close if the new petrol station was given approval with the loss of eight jobs.
Roy Smith (Community Representatives, Golf Green) told the development control committee: "The development could spell disaster for trading already in operation."
He said he already knew of two garages in operation and the closure of small businesses had to be considered, along with the extra traffic on London Road.
A small tourist information centre within the site had been agreed as part of the approval.
However, following the go-ahead for the petrol station, this will either be built elsewhere on the overall park or a financial contribution made to the council to build it elsewhere in the town by developers, Britton Construction.
