Motorists in Essex face further headaches on the A12 next year as more roadworks are planned.

If the works run through the summer, they will clash with major rail improvement works on the main line to Liverpool Street.

Following improvement schemes along other stretches of the road the Highways Agency has confirmed that a section from Marks Tey to Kelvedon will be resurfaced in 2004.

Workers are currently completing work on the Witham bypass stretch and drivers have faced months of frustration, queuing to get through the area.

The Witham part is due to be finished by Christmas, but drivers can only expect a few months of respite before the new work is started next summer.

The old concrete surface of the Marks Tey to Kelvedon stretch will be dug up and a new low-noise surface put down.

But for eight weeks, between July 11 and September 5, there will be no trains between Manningtree and Ipswich, forcing more traffic on the road.

A spokeswoman for the Highways Agency said the new surface would benefit people living alongside the A12 as well as drivers as it would be a lot quieter for them.
