A 51-year-old woman was held up by knifepoint after letting a man into her shop after closing time.
The manager of Martin The Newsagent in Timberlog Lane, Basildon, re-opened the store after a man knocked on the door yesterday.
He pulled out a six-inch knife, threatened her with it, then escaped with hundreds of pounds.
Paramedics treated the Basildon woman for shock. She was not hurt.
Kerry Pitman, shop supervisor, said: "She was in the shop on her own so must have been terrified."
The thief was 5ft 6ins tall and unshaven. He wore a black wooly hat and a dark bomber jacket.
