People needing wheelchairs this winter will be forced to search elsewhere after the announcement that the Southend Wheelchair Service is to close.
The service, run by Southend Primary Care Trust, will be closed from Monday December 8 until Monday January 5, due to "extreme staff shortages".
A trust spokesman said the four week closure would enable staff to deal with outstanding orders and referrals ensuring a more effective service in the new year.
The wheelchair repair service will not be affected and will operate as usual during this period for emergency repairs and collections.
