Undercover police could be used to crackdown on young vandals who pelted dozens of missiles at a bus smashing its windows.

The driver was left so shaken he was forced to abandon his route along Eastern Esplanade, Canvey, following the attack.

Chris McCormick, divisional manager at FirstBus, said plain-clothes police officers on buses were being considered as part of new measures to tackle the problem.

He added: "We have a good relationship with the police who have issued drivers with a direct number to call if they are confronted with problems like this.

"We have discussed the possibility of plain-clothed police officers travelling on buses. That is something we are considering."

Mr McCormick said the driver of the bus, who has not been named, was unhurt but "shook up".

He said the cancellation of other buses on that route following the incident had been a temporary measure while police officers searched for the vandals on the island.

Mr McCormick confirmed buses were now back running on that route between the Haystack pub, in Long Road, Canvey, to Eastern Esplanade.
