Southend's trip north for a National Women's Trophy round two match ended in disappointment as they lost to Sheffield Hatters at the English Institute of Sport.

Injury and illness had left Swifts depleted and they were forced to include cadet captain Rebecca Rambin, who should have been playing for own side in Brighton.

The Hatters boast the finest record in women's basketball and fielded a very experienced squad for the match.

Swifts' cadets travelled to the south coast to play their first round Women's National Cup match and won 60-50.

They struggled without 6ft 3ins captain Rebecca Rambin and only Abi Dempsey played anywehere near her normal form with an outstanding 27 points in a 60-50 defeat at the hands of Brighton Bears.
