Staff and students and South Benfleet Primary School are trying to raise £50,000 to build the library, in memory of the school's former head teacher.

Cyndy Batty, 54, who was head teacher for 18 years, died suddenly last year.

The plans for the work - a new building with entrance to one side of the school - have been drawn up.

The school has so far raised £35,000 and a recent fundraising event earned another £500 for the cause.

Head teacher Dominic Carver said: "We want to build a library as a memorial to Miss Batty and provide more working space for staff and pupils."
