Colchester United boss Phil Parkinson has poured scorn on 'ridiculous' speculation linking him with the vacant Crystal Palace manager's job.

Parkinson, who has guided the U's into the Second Division's top five and through to the New Year rounds of the FA Cup and LDV Vans Trophy, asked the Evening Gazette: "Where do they dig up this rubbish from?

"Does some national newspaper reporter simply look at which clubs need a manager and then look at which managers are doing quite well and link them to the job?"

The ambitious U's boss was named in a prominent Saturday newspaper as a possible successor to sacked Selhurst Park manager Steve Kember. Kit Symons is currently in charge at Palace on a ceretaker basis.
