A Good Samaritan has died after being struck by a vehicle as he rushed to help the victims of a car smash.

Kevin Baldwin, 25, lost his fight for life following a horrific six-vehicle pile-up on the A13.

He lived in Pembury Road, Westcliff, with his partner and their baby.

An 18-year-old from Grays, who has not yet been named, was found dead in the outside lane of the A13 after being hit by one or more vehicles.

Mr Baldwin had stopped his Ford Transit van to help at the scene as he made his way home from work.

His family are said to be "deeply shocked" by the tragedy.

Police are investigating whether a race caused the initial smash on the Southend-bound track, just past the Purfleet exit at 4.45am on Saturday.

A Vauxhall Omega containing three men and a woman ended up on its roof.
