A horror smash on the A13 left a teenager dead and a good Samaritan from south Essex fighting for his life.
Police are investigating whether a road race caused the six-car pile-up on the Southend-bound track of the A13 just past the Purfleet exit at the Wennington interchange at 4.45am on Saturday.
Three men and a woman escaped a Vauxhall Omega after it spun out of control, rolled down an embankment and landed on its roof. The 25-year-old driver of a Transit van who stopped to assist was struck by another vehicle. The man, from Southend, is in Basildon Hospital in a critical condition.
An 18-year-old man from Grays, who wandered into oncoming traffic in a confused state after getting out of the Omega, was found dead in the outside lane of the A13 having been struck by one or more vehicles.
Witnesses should call Laindon road policing unit on 01268 541312.
