A long-held ambition to build a youth centre in Billericay has come a step closer with the submission of a planning application.

A purpose-built youth centre on land at Hannakins Farm in Rosebay Avenue, has been a dream of community leaders and youngsters for more than 10 years.

A Billericay Youth Facility Executive Committee has now been established and a fresh planning application has been lodged to Basildon Council.

The new push is hoped to get the plans firmly underway.

The Guinness Trust built many houses on the Queens Park estate and has given the project its backing. There is also a trust representative, Justin King, on the executive committee.

The Billericay Residents Association, the West Billericay Community Association and Billericay Town Council are among the other groups to be represented.

The centre is expected to cost from £250,000 to £300,000 and include a large games room, music room, quiet study room and a snack bar.

Chairman of Billericay Town Council, Cllr Trevor Stansfield, said the plans have been drawn up with the help of youngsters.

He said:"This is our next push to make the youth centre a reality - we will get this facility somewhere in Billericay it is just a case of where."
