A nursery for 50 children has been given the go-ahead.
Tendring Council has passed plans for the nursery in the grounds of Harwich Community Primary School in Barrack Lane.
It would be run by the Ark Family Resource Centre and be the first in the ward to cater for under two-year-olds.
Town councillor and chairman of governors, Lawrie Payne, said it was a major scheme for the area.
He told Tendring Council development control committee: "We are on a deadline and there is a time limit for this to be built and up and running, and that is getting very pressing."
