A rush-hour train was brought to an abrupt standstill when a psychiatric patient pulled the emergency cord because she missed her appointment at Runwell hospital.
The woman, believed to be in her late 40s, was travelling on the 6.10pm First Great Eastern service from Southend Victoria last night when she brought the train to a halt between Wickford and Billericay.
As the train driver walked through the carriages to investigate, he was approached by the woman who explained she had missed her stop.
She said she had a 6pm appointment for medication at Runwell Hospital, Wickford and asked the driver to reverse back to Wickford Station. The driver told the woman he could not reverse the train.
