Concerns about vandalism at Canvey's long-awaited new cemetery were being aired today, just 24 hours before the first person will be buried there.

Labour councillor Terry Blackwell complained of a lack of security around the graveyard in Northwick Road.

Islanders have waited three years for the cemetery to open.

Mr Blackwell, a councillor for central Canvey, said: "The fence isn't high enough. People will be able to just hop over it.

"There's no way it will stop vandals. It hasn't even got spikes along the top. Once people's headstones have been put up, I'm worried it will become a target for vandals."
