Southend United progressed to the quarter finals of the Essex Senior Cup with a comprehensive 3-0 victory at Eastern Counties League side Clacton Town last night.

Blues player manager Steve Tilson bagged a well-taken brace - while young midfielder Anthony Clark was also on target in a largely one-sided encounter.

"It was an excellent team performance," said 37-year-old Tilson. "We totally dominated the opening 25 minutes on a difficult pitch and were always in control.

"On a personal note it was great to get two goals but everyone played ever so well - especially Anthony Clark."

And it was who Clark opened the scoring after just nine minutes - converting a right wing cross from Michael Husbands - before Steve Tilson tapped home his first of the evening just six minutes later, with Husbands again the provider.

The speedy former Aston Villa forward then twice came close to working his own name onto the score-sheet before Carl Emberson impressively tipped Paul Hillier's 20-yard drive around the post at the other end of the field.

After the interval, Tilson volleyed home a scorching 25-yard shot before Drewe Broughton was denied by the post in a game which saw the Shrimpers progress to the final eight of the competition.
