Heathrow-based airlines have welcomed the Government's Aviation White Paper but have promised to fight any attempts to make them pay for the Stansted runway.
Following the Alistair Darling's announcements on Tuesday, December 16, British Airways and BMI said they were encouraged by long-term plans to build a third runway at Heathrow.
Adding that they were disappointed that Stansted airport is to be expanded first.
Mr Darling said due environmental worries at Heathrow, and the fast growth of Stansted, the Essex airport would be expanded first.
The Transport Secretary said the construction of a new landing strip at Heathrow, would be delayed for at least a decade and will only go ahead if air quality and noise pollution standards are improved.
