Wet weather played havoc with Ballards Gore's Christmas Classic, a better ball with draw for playing partners.

A number of players pulled out in the morning and many of those who did arrive went home again when their partners did not turn up.

In the end all those who arrived and stayed were fitted it.

An incredibly close finish saw four pairs finish on 46 points.

These were Eddie Smith (9) and Ernie Stimson (13), Gary Treen (15) and Mark Langley (18), Dave Boosey (12) and Alan McNair (18) and Graham Ware (13) and Terry Watkins (17).

Boosey and McNair must have thought they had won when they came in with 26 points over the back nine, including four pointers on holes 17 and 18.

But one of the last duos to come in, 18-handicapper Keith Holmes and Barry Rockliff (15), returned an incredible 50 points for victory.
