A headteacher is leaving the classroom to take up her position on the putting green.

Pat Elliot has been running Westcliff High School for Girls for the last 13 years but after more than a decade of success she is hanging up her mortarboard to take up a set of golf clubs.

The 60-year-old head of the Kenilworth Gardens school is looking to enjoy her retirement and take up a wide range of new interests, including travel, golf and even studying herself.

She said: "I am looking to keep fit and I hope to take up golf so if anyone out there is wanting to start playing golf I would be happy to have a partner - but I would warn them I am only a beginner.

"I have also enrolled in the Open University.

"I am very interested in philosophy and literature and I have spent so long organising other people's classes I will enjoy doing a bit of studying myself."

But Mrs Elliot - and her Yorkshire terrier Bruce - will be much missed at the specialist college in science and engineering.

Since the popular headteacher took over Westcliff High buildings have been modernised and a new science block and sports hall have been built.
