New powers given to Castle Point councillors will help boost community projects in the borough by thousands of pounds each year.
Residents who own two homes in the borough currently get a 50 per cent council discount on the second home, as do owners of empty properties in the borough.
The discount could now be completely cut in line with new Government legislation.
Essex County Council would get the extra cash. It is believed Castle Point would get a share of about 60 per cent to put towards community projects.
Director of central services Michael Clayton said the move would discourage people from leaving properties standing empty.
Councillors at the latest meeting of the central services committee agreed to follow Mr Clayton's recommendation on ending the discounts.
