Former Bradford City boss Nicky Law is believed to have been interviewed for the vacant Roots Hall hot-seat.
Sources close to the Shrimpers claim the 42-year-old has held talks with the club's co-owner Ron Martin and is being considered as the next Blues boss.
Law, who figured for Barnsley, Notts County and Chesterfield among others during a lengthy playing career, was handed his first managerial job with the Spireites in 2000.
And, during his successful stint at Saltergate, Law guided Chesterfield to promotion up into the Second Division despite his side having nine points knocked off their already impressive tally for financial irregularities.
Five months into the following season however, Law, whose side crashed out of the FA Cup at Roots Hall, replaced Jim Jeffries at First Division Bradford City.
A strict disciplinarian, Law was forced to work with a tight budget at the Bantams - guiding the Valley Parade side to safety two seasons running.
