A woman who worked on the Soham inquiry has told how murderer Ian Huntley displayed an unnatural interest in the murder hunt.

Killer Huntley was yesterday jailed for life for the murders of schoolgirls Jessica Chapman and Holly Wells.

Essex Police press officer Kim Perks

Essex Police press officer Kim Perks had been seconded to Soham during the search for the girls.

Miss Perks worked with Cambridgeshire Police and helped arrange press conferences in Soham.

She said she frequently met Huntley, who she noticed had an "unnatural interest" in the case and the press conferences.

Miss Perks was working 18 and 20-hour days and kept going in the desperate hope the girls would be found safe and well.

Describing Huntley, she said: "Certainly myself and the press noticed he was present a lot of the time. He sat through our conferences and he was generally around.

"As time went on, certainly we all began to feel more and more uncomfortable with his almost incessant presence but there was nothing specific you could put your finger on. He was just constantly there."
